Engine Diagnostics & Check Engine Light Scanning in Mascot
Dealer-level scan tools and real diagnostic experience to find the actual fault — not just the code.
A check engine light tells you something is wrong, but not what. Plugging in a cheap code reader gives you a five-character fault code, and that code is only ever a starting point. A P0171 does not mean "replace the oxygen sensor" — it means the engine is running lean, and there are a dozen reasons that might be happening.
We have one of the largest ranges of computer diagnostic scanners in Sydney, covering European, Japanese, Korean, American and Australian vehicles from the mid-1990s to current model year. That matters, because a generic OBD-II reader only sees emissions-related data. Manufacturer-level tools see the transmission, ABS, airbag, body and comfort modules too.
Our diagnostic process is systematic: read the stored and pending codes, review live data and freeze-frame information, then test the actual components before anything gets replaced. You get a clear explanation of what is wrong, what it will cost, and what happens if you leave it.

Engine Diagnostics — common questions
How much does engine diagnostics cost? +
Diagnostic time is charged at our standard workshop rate and depends on how involved the fault is — a straightforward stored code is far quicker than an intermittent electrical fault. We confirm the cost with you before starting, and if you go ahead with the repair, the diagnostic fee is credited against the job. Call 02 9667 4008 for a quote on your vehicle.
Can I keep driving with the check engine light on? +
A steady light usually means the car is safe to drive to a workshop, but the fault should be looked at promptly. A flashing light is different — it typically indicates a misfire that can destroy the catalytic converter within minutes of driving. If your light is flashing, stop driving and call us.
Do you diagnose European cars? +
Yes. We carry manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche, Land Rover, Volvo and more, alongside Japanese, Korean, American and Australian makes.
Why did another mechanic replace a part and the light came back? +
Almost always because the fault code was treated as a diagnosis rather than a symptom. A code points to a circuit or a system, not a specific failed part. We test the component before replacing it, which is slower up front and considerably cheaper overall.
