Radiator, Water Pump & Cooling System Repairs in Mascot

Radiators, water pumps, thermostats and hoses — fixed before overheating wrecks the engine.

Cooling system failure is the most expensive cheap repair in motoring. A perished hose or a stuck thermostat costs very little to replace, but if it lets go in traffic and the engine overheats, you can be looking at a warped cylinder head or a cracked block.

Sydney summers and stop-start traffic make this worse. An engine sitting in queued traffic on a 38-degree day relies entirely on the radiator fan and a healthy coolant system, and a marginal cooling system that copes fine in winter will find its limit on the first hot day.

We pressure-test the system to find leaks that are invisible when the engine is cold, test the thermostat and fan operation, and check the coolant itself. Coolant is not just water with dye in it — it contains corrosion inhibitors that deplete over time, and old coolant quietly eats the system from the inside.

What's included

  • Cooling system pressure testing and leak detection
  • Radiator repair and replacement
  • Water pump replacement
  • Thermostat and housing replacement
  • Radiator hose and heater hose replacement
  • Coolant flush and correct-specification refill

Signs you need this looked at

  • Temperature gauge reading higher than normal
  • Coolant pooling under the car, or a sweet smell
  • Steam from under the bonnet
  • Heater blowing cold when the engine is warm
  • Coolant level dropping with no visible leak

Cooling System — common questions

My car is overheating — what should I do? +

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch the engine off. Do not keep driving to get somewhere convenient, and do not open the radiator cap while it is hot. Let it cool completely, then call us on 02 9667 4008. Towing a car is dramatically cheaper than replacing a cylinder head.

How often should coolant be replaced? +

Typically every two to five years depending on the vehicle and coolant type. It is not about the water — it is the corrosion inhibitors, which deplete over time. Old coolant allows internal corrosion that eventually blocks the radiator and heater core.

Can I just top it up with water? +

In an emergency, to get off the road safely, yes. As a fix, no. Plain water offers no corrosion protection, boils at a lower temperature and freezes at a higher one. And if the level keeps dropping there is a leak that needs finding — topping up is treating the symptom.

Why is my heater blowing cold? +

Often the first sign of a cooling system problem — commonly low coolant, a stuck-open thermostat, or a blocked heater core. Because the heater runs off engine coolant, it frequently gives you warning before the temperature gauge does.
